Kaitlyn's surgery went well! It was about 2 hours and 5 min long. They were going to admit her and had a bed ready but then decided that we could take her home which we were happy about. Thanks for all of your prayers and well wishes!
We are now in recovery mode which is more involved than we thought. She went in to the OR like a trooper!!! We opted out of giving her any drugs to sedate her before hand because she was doing so well. She came out of the anesthesia pretty upset but once they gave her some morphine she was back in la-la land:) The skin graft was larger than we expected. It covers the area from her top lip line all the way to her "smile crease" line. This will help minimize a scar line if its in the smile crease line. The skin was bright white but already changing colors to a purplish and will eventually turn to a skin color tone after several weeks. She has to wear arm stints to keep her arms straight and keep her from touching the area because it is completely exposed and not bandaged. They used dissolvable stitches so we dont have to go back to the OR to have them removed which is great! We havent seen the area where they took the skin from in front of her ear because its covered with steri-strips. The hard part now is keeping her from getting at the new, fragile skin. Its VERY delicate and the slightest rub or anything would be very bad. Of course she is a tummy sleeper so we are going to have to let her sleep with us for a few nights so we can keep her on her back and monitor her. Cam and I are taking shifts sitting with her because we cant trust her enough to leave her alone for fear she will rub the skin with her arm stints which she has already figured out. We had an ok night. Cam and I didnt sleep much though. She is doing really well this morning and had her personality back which was great! We go back to see her plastic surgeon on Monday. We will keep you updated!
Here are some pictures of her before surgery. She was very happy in the car but got more curious when we were in the hospital and all of the doctors were in the room. I am opting out of showing any pictures of the skin graft now as its pretty graphic looking but once it heals it will look wonderful!!!!!
